Book Trailers

I do my best to read as many middle grade and YA novels as possible, but each year the library acquires more books than I have time to read. That means I often cannot offer book recommendations based on more than reviews in School Library Journal or The Horn Book.

To help fill the gap, I turn to book trailers. Like movie trailers, book trailers tell just enough about a book's plot and characters to spark interest. Here are some examples:

Pax, by Sara Pennypacker

Crenshaw, by Katherine Applegate

Hello, Universe, by Erin Entrada Kelly (this one is a book talk)

Ms. Bixby’s Last Day, by John David Anderson

The Fourteenth Goldfish, by Jennifer Holm (a book talk by Holm, who is also the author of Sunny Side Up, a very popular graphic novel)

The Wild Robot, by Peter Brown

There are also at least a couple of sites that have several quality book trailers. Barcaum Book Trailers is a YouTube channel with trailers and book talks for several current titles. For dozens of trailers made by students, as well as ideas and instructions for making book trailers, visit Book Trailers for Readers.
